On Solitude

They say that trials are given to a person according to his or her strength.

Solitude is granted to the strongest. This is the privilege of the morally mature.

For the weak, it frightens, embitters, exhausts, devastates, and destroys.

For the strong, loneliness is not a cause for depression, not a tragedy, but a conscious choice, time and an opportunity for self-development and self-knowledge, a comfort zone, a lifestyle, a breath of fresh air—or, more accurately, a place where they go to breathe.

It's also a character trait—the ability to demand nothing and expect nothing from others.

People who aren't afraid of solitude aren't afraid of anything at all.

They burned away their weaknesses long ago, becoming invulnerable to the machinations of others …
