In the Cathedral

A sunny Sunday afternoon in Porto Alegre in the Southbrazilian summer of 2026, few people are on the streets, quite some do not exactly inspire confidence. The cathedral near my downtown hotel I've a few times photographed, today I go inside, sit on one of the benches and let my thoughts wander.

People of former times demonstrated with their churches that they paid tribute to a higher power, that there was more to life than they themselves, that they were not self-sufficient. Life was more than what they were able to understand. Religion was an expression of their longing to understand.
