Waking up means realizing that our situation is hopeless – and wonderful. There is nothing for us to do except simply to live this second. When we're in crisis, or in sesshin, we may not wake up fully, but we wake up enough so that we see our life shifts. We realize that our usual maneuvers – worrying about the past, projecting an imaginary future – don't make sense; they waste precious seconds.
