Traditional therapies understand addiction as a medical, psychological or social problem. And there is no doubt, it indeed is. Primarily, however, it is an existential/spiritual problem. For treatment to work, addiction needs to be seen not so much as a defect to be corrected but as a call for a fundamental re-orientation, an attitude change. In other words: addiction counselling requires not so much specialist knowledge but broad (and reflected upon) life experience, a thinking personality, a warm heart.
